Exploring Numbers and Operations! - BrainBoozle Educational Resource

Understanding Numbers

In math, we use numbers to count, measure, and solve problems. There are different types of numbers such as whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Whole Numbers

Whole numbers are the numbers we use every day. They start from 0 and go up to infinity. For example, 1, 2, 3, and so on are whole numbers. They do not have any parts or decimals.

Fractions

A fraction shows a part of a whole. It is written with two numbers, one on top of the other, like this: 1/2. The top number is called the numerator, and the bottom number is the denominator. For example, if you have a pizza cut into 4 pieces and you eat 1 piece, you have eaten 1/4 of the pizza!

Decimals

Decimals are another way to show parts of a whole, but they use a dot. For example, 0.5 is the same as 1/2. Decimals can be very useful in measuring things like money or lengths.

Basic Operations

In math, we also learn about operations. The four main operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each operation helps us solve different kinds of problems.

Addition

Addition is about putting things together. For example, if you have 2 apples and you get 3 more apples, you have a total of 5 apples!

Subtraction

Subtraction is about taking away. If you have 5 candies and you eat 2 candies, you have 3 candies left.

Multiplication

Multiplication is like adding the same number over and over. If you have 4 bags with 6 oranges in each bag, you have a total of 24 oranges.

Division

Division is splitting things into equal parts. If you have 12 cookies and you want to share them with 3 friends, each person gets 4 cookies.
